Here"s a sure money maker: get some cases of hand-sanitizers products and set up a sales table where people are exiting a screening of the latest Steven Soderbergh film, Contagion.
That had to be on the mind of viewers after they watched this world crises thriller that tells a mostly plausible story about a global pandemic that results from the out-of-control spreading of renegade virus of unknown origins. The virus kills victims within days of being infected, giving the film a ready-made sense of urgency.
Nevertheless, such a plot would seem to have upper-level B-movie quality about it – that is, if it weren"t for the fact that this film includes a number of Hollywood heavyweights (in statue, not size) four of whom possess Oscars as well as other Academy nominations and major award honors. It also served the film well that this outstanding cast was marshaled under the capable direction of Steven Soderbergh.
Starring previous Oscar winners Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, joined by notable stars such as Jude Law, Lawrence Fishburne, Elliot Gould, Sanaa Lathan and other established character actors, the inherent cast talent makes it a very credible movie. The cast largely portrays characters who are part of key and real-life entities – such as the Center for Disease and Control, the World Health Organization, Homeland Security, the media (both professional and amateur) – which all gives the tense plot a realistic feel of something that not only could happen, but probably will at some point.
Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns appear to have focused a lot of their energy on the science of it all, resulting in script that will not be known for many memorable lines or engaging dialogue (Elliott Gould has the best line in a statement about blogs and, hence, the only one likely to be remembered long after viewers depart the theatre. However the screen presence that this star-laden cast gives its characters saves the movie from that script shortcoming. The plot about a pandemic and the resulting worldwide chaos gives the film an inherent riveting strength, and therefore requiring only credible performances from the actors – which they all deliver without benefit of great lines.
The best performance of the film by a non-Hollywood heavyweight is delivered by veteran actress Jennifer Ehle, who was seen earlier this year in The Adjustment Bureau and last year in The King"s Speech – both in lesser roles. Here, however, Ehle gives an admirable performance as Dr. Ally Hextall, a character that is critical to movie"s resolution and could be the biggest role to-date in her career.
The director and screenwriter appear to have done their homework on this subject, and they wisely enlisted a noted Columbia University virologist to help the movie stay accurate with the needed scientific terms and actions. And to the filmmakers" credit, they employ the scientific content in the film without overriding the drama – a critical element of the film"s overall chemistry.
Viewers" that recall Soderbergh previous 2000 work Traffic – a four-Oscar triumph – will note that, like that 2000 film, the director has advanced Contagion"s story with essentially three subplots. Two of the narratives are the most compelling. One, featuring Kate Winslet, Larry Fishburne and Jennifer Ehle, charts the health officials" race to come up with a vaccine – which turns out to be more exciting than it sounds. Meanwhile, there is also a supporting narrative anchored by Matt Damon shows the difficult impact of the disease on one family throughout the ordeal. The former is the real thriller strength of the film, which the latter essentially keeps it real concerning the virus outbreak"s effect on everyday people.
The other narrative cord is more widespread, relating to the worldwide impact of the virus. Anchored by Marion Cotillard, who plays another CDC health official, this sub-plot"s injection of a kidnapping in the story represents a minor instance of implausibility, and the characters in this part are not developed to the extent that others in the rest of the movie. Overall, the spreading of the Hollywood star wealth in this film does not allow for very deep character development with any of the characters in this movie; Matt Damon"s down-to-the-neighborhood-earth role is as deep as it gets.
The crises realism is Contagion"s biggest strength; that combined with the quality of the cast and creativity of the filmmakers ensures that such a subject matter does not leave you dozing off with your popcorn spilling onto your lap. There may be a screen writing Oscar nomination in the offing for this film, but Damon may be the only actor in this film with any Oscar possibilities?and that being an outside chance at that.
It is indeed a solid film that that joins The Help and the Rise of the Planet of the Apes in helping viewers to forgive the American movie industry for the horrible summer 2011 that viewers had to endure.
